More Than 9,000 Teens Pledged to Take Four Simple Steps to Get on the Path to a Sound Financial Future

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Make Change Count Pledge, launched by Charles Schwab Foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) in October 2010, has ended after approximately 9,000 teens across the country pledged to make positive financial choices and help friends and family do the same.

“Teens across America are exposed to so many stories of financial hardship both in the news and in their own lives, but the Make Change Count pledge educated thousands of them about how they can take more control of their own financial future and gave them a way to get started,” said Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, president of Charles Schwab Foundation. “By taking the pledge, they committed to four fundamental steps that can pave the way toward a lifetime of financial health and well-being.”

To participate in the online pledge, teens across America committed to four personal steps:

  • Save Money. If I don’t already have one, I’ll open a savings account and add to it regularly. That way, I’ll always have money for the important things in life.
  • Spend Wisely. I'll recognize the difference between needs vs. wants and think carefully about how I spend my money.
  • Plan for College. I'll explore how to make college a reality, because I know it can make a big difference in my future.
  • Share What I Know. I’ll help my friends and family understand how to make good choices with their money, too!

Along with the pledge, learning resources and links to savings calculators, budgeting plans, financial aid information and interactive games were made available on the website.

The pledge deepened and extended the message of the successful Money Matters: Make it Countsm personal finance program offered at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country and funded by Charles Schwab Foundation. Money Matters: Make it Count is now one of the most widely adopted programs offered by BGCA, and has been implemented in over 1,700 Boys & Girls Clubs with teen programming.

About Money Matters: Make It Count

Funded by Charles Schwab Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Money Matters program is designed to promote money management skills among teens, ages 13-18. The program consists of fun, interactive activities and exercises on topics such as using a checking account, managing debt, saving for college and learning the basics of investing. The program is targeted primarily at teens from underserved communities.

Nearly 325,000 youth in over 1,700 teen Boys & Girls Clubs across the U.S. have participated in Money Matters since it launched in mid-2004. In addition, Charles Schwab Foundation has presented a cumulative total of $390,000 in scholarships to 187 Club teens who completed Money Matters and demonstrated exceptional financial skills from their newly acquired knowledge of personal finance.
