DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Project Night Night has won the “Schwab Gives” charity contest and received a $10,000 check this morning at Schwab’s Cherry Creek branch office at 201 Columbine Street. The check was presented by Cole Schofield, vice president of Schwab Investor Services, to Nancy Murray McFadden, a local Project Night Night volunteer.

“We felt this was a great way to help promote the work of the nine organizations we teamed up with for Schwab Volunteer Week and to encourage the community to participate with us,” said Schofield. “While there could only be one grant-winner, the contest itself helped spark awareness of the great work all these organizations do in the Denver community.”

Voting for the general public took place on the Schwab MoneyWise Facebook page at where visitors could learn about each of the organizations, cast their vote and share the information with their Facebook friends. The contest was promoted through a variety of channels, including regular updates on Twitter, print advertising through the Denver Newspaper Agency and digital banner advertising targeting the Denver community online, as well as through other news media outreach that included a public service radio announcement.

“This contest has been a great experience for Project Night Night,” said Kendra Robins, founder and executive director of Project Night Night. “It’s given us a great reason to reach out to our constituents as well as to the Denver community to try to raise visibility for the work we do to help homeless children. We are very grateful to Schwab for their employees’ pitching in with us during Schwab Volunteer Week, as well as for this extra grant which will enable us to impact the lives of 500 children in Denver. But, honestly, even if we hadn’t won the grant, we still would have benefited from all the promotion around the contest itself.”

Project Night Night’s mission is “helping homeless children have sweeter dreams” by providing comfort items, free of charge, to homeless children from birth to pre-teen in an effort to help them feel secure, cozy, ready to learn, and significant. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children's book, and a stuffed animal -- all nestled inside a new canvas tote bag. By providing objects of comfort, Project Night Night aims to reduce trauma and advance the cognitive well-being of homeless children across the U.S. Project Night Night has worked with Schwab offices in Denver since 2008. Through Schwab Volunteer Week efforts, Schwab and Project Night Night have distributed over 625 Night Night Packages to the Denver community.

The other organizations that competed for the grant were:

This year marks the eighth consecutive year that Schwab has galvanized its employees to roll up their sleeves for community service projects during a designated period of company-sponsored time off. Throughout the week, over 2,200 employees and executives nationwide donated approximately 8,800 community service hours on more than 140 different service projects benefiting over 100 charities, many of which aim to help alleviate poverty and provide the foundation for financial stability. In Denver, more than 260 Schwab employees volunteered with all nine agencies that participated in the Schwab Gives charity contest. Projects included activities like painting, cleaning, planting and landscaping, repair and light construction, serving meals to the homeless, teaching the basics of personal finance to youth, and assembling tote bags with comfort items for homeless children. In addition to the grant of $10,000 given to Project Night Night by The Charles Schwab Corporation, each of the charities received a $500 grant from Charles Schwab Foundation.
